Bacolod is the capital of Negros Occidental province well known for its Masskara Festival celebrated every October. In addition, the city received numerous awards and citations from different organizations for having one of the best infrastructure, stable economy, interesting culture and conducive environment.

One-stop Shop!

 SM City - Bacolod is a one of the many SM Malls in the Philippines. The mall is composed of stores, boutiques, restaurants, bookstore, cinema, department store, grocery, drugstores,etc. It got almost everything.

The place where people usually hang out and meet up. So if u want to eat, shop or even just walk around, try going to SM and enjoy seeing people from all walks of life.
What to buy: --- Pasalubong (take home stuff) like local delicacies such as piaya, napoleones, biscocho, barquillos, etc. from Bong bong's or Merci.

--- try the delicious cakes of Bob's and Calea. ;)
What to pay: It depends on your preference and budget.

 If you are looking for something to bring back home from Bacolod, visit Bong-bong's and you'll find lots of food and other souvenir for "pasalubong" (take-home).

Bong-bong, the owner of the store, used to be an ordinary baker and his story of "from rags to riches" is really inspiring. Bong-bongs sells local delicacy including the famous piaya which is the trademark of Bacolod. They also sell shirts and other souvenir items on the shop.

It is in their main store, which is in Alijis-Murcia Road, where they have their bakery and you can buy hot piaya from there. They also have branches in Corner Alunan, Araneta St. in downtown Bacolod, SM City and Robinson's Place.
What to buy: Piaya, barquillos, cheesetart, Tshirt...

Robinson's Place is one of the malls in Bacolod. It is located in Mandalagan, Northern part of the City. Robinson's is a one-stop shop with boutiques, restaurants, cinera, grocery, department store and amusement.

 Its a shop with ceramics, candle products, coconut crafts, woven bags, jewelry, furnitures... everything inside are made locally. Local delicacies also available. The place is airy and clean and a great place to find unique gifts.

Shop At Bacolod's Very First Mall

saw SM Mall and Robinson's Mall in Bacolod City, but I didn't bother to go there, as I already know what it's like shopping in those malls. I wanted to see what the very first mall in Bacolod looked like, the Plaza Mart. The mall has been renovated, but it was opened in 1965, and was the first modern commercial center in Western Visayas to provide shoppers with an escalator. It is right in the heart of the city. As I went up the escalator, I noticed that the ambience was like the old shopping center in Greenhills. There were boutiques selling imported garments, faux jewelry, bags, footwear, health supplements and other imported goods. I stopped by Kyak, a boutique which seemed to have it all.
What to buy: I left Kyak Boutique happy with the reasonably-priced items I bought:t 2 summer dresses, leggings, Pito-Pito Health Syrup, and organic mosquito repellant.
What to pay: I spent less than P1,000 for said items

 

Shop Like You Were At Divisoria’s 628...

 While on the way to their house, my cousin pointed to me the 888 Chinatown Square. She said it is often likened to Divisoria’s 628 Department Store in Manila where the prices of items are so low but shoppers can still haggle for a discount, depending on one’s bargaining skills.
What to buy: 888 Chinatown Square offers a wide range of very affordable merchandise like ready-to-wear garments, jewelry, accessories, footwear, DVDs, cell phone units and the latest fad and gadgets from China.

This is far from Bacolod but worth a mention...

Sipalay Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Bacolod and the province and today is frequently the site of beach parties and frolicking in the sand.

As the popularity of Sipalay Beach grows year by year, season by season, beach resorts have sprung around the area. There are also a lot of underwater attractions to be seen, with myriad forms of fish, seahorses, nudibranches and more.

 Piaya Ingredients:

dough :

• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• A pinch of salt (optional)
• 3 tbsp. butter or shortening, chilled
• 5-6 tbsp. water, icy cold

Filling: 

• 1/2 cup dark muscovado sugar
• 1 tsp. glucose or honey syrup
• 1/8 cup sesame seeds, for coating

Cooking Procedure:

• Combine all-purpose flour and a pinch of salt in a bowl and mix well. Add chilled butter or shortening into the flour and pinch with your fingers until forms into a crumb. Add the icy cold water 1 tablespoon at a time and form into a dough. Place on a clean board and knead until smooth.

Negros Occidental is the sugar bowl of the Philippines and some would say it is the sweetest province in the country because of its history, people and food. Here’s one proof of its sweet delicacy that once you’ve tasted, you can’t get enough of it.

Piaya or piyaya is a muscovado-filled unleavened flatbread and the best Piaya can be found in only Negros Occidental where it originated. Negrenses sell piaya in open-air markets, grocery stores and local pasalubong centers such as Bongbongs and Merci. Also we recommend to try the piaya of Byrons located in Corner San Juan & San Sebastian Streets, they serve one of the oldest recipe with an authentic taste of Piaya filled with muscovado.

The history of MassKara Festival began in 1980 when the villagers in Bacolod were suffering an economic crisis. The main livelihood of people in Bacolod then was sugar cane farming. At that time, the price of sugar was at an all-time low due to the invention of sugar substitutes like fructose corn syrup in the United States. In addition to the crisis economy, many people in Bacolod lost their families when MV Don Juan sank that same year. About 700 Filipinos, including Bacolod villagers perished in that tragedy. In order to resist the sorrow, the local government together with the villagers held a festival of smiles in the hope that the city could always be tough and survive even the hardest moments in life.

The name MassKara Festival is taken from the words ‘mass' which means crowd, and ‘kara' which means for face, so MassKara means crowded for face or masks for many faces. MassKara was conceived by the Art Association of Bacolod (AAB), the intention of which was to creatively organize a street dance parade thus getting away from a "meaningless" civic-military parade. It was also meant to hide the tears and sorrows brought about by the sugar crisis and the MV Don Juan sea mishap.

People celebrate the MassKara Festival by wearing smiling-faced masks, colorful costumes, and unique accessories, while parading and dancing on the streets of Bacolod. This festival contains a message about being happy despite being in the toughest state of life.

Every October, the streets of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental become a sight of merriment. There are many dancers dancing their hearts away and all wearing mask and people from all walks of life troop to the streets to see colorfully-masked dancers dance their heart away to the infectious rhythm of the Latin musical beat in a stunning display of mastery, gaiety, coordination and stamina. This is what they called the "MassKara Festival".
